"I got tired of sitting around
waiting for sick people to
come see me at the hospital."

When Dr. Dennis Marke graduated from Loma Linda [Calif.] University last summer, a new world awaited him back in Africa. The doctor came to the United States from Sierra Leone, which has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate in the world. To many of us, Dennis' accounts of young mothers and the babies who die because villages have no doctors or midwives are simply sad stories, but to Dennis, they are the realities of his life as an African doctor.

"I wanted to go and meet people in their communities and empower them with knowledge and programs to help them prevent the diseases that are killing them," he explained.

To bring solutions to his home country, Dennis knew he needed more training in public health. He came to the United States as a World Communion Scholar, studying maternal and child health, as well as health education and promotion.

Dennis' studies in the United States were made possible because caring United Methodists gave generously on World Communion Sunday. In today's economy, your contributions are needed more than ever. Your gifts help racial- and ethnic-minority students in the United States and international students. Like Dennis, they want to serve God in life-changing ministries.

Apostalic Mission of Haiti - Rev. Suprian Augustin
An independent Christian ministry headquartered in Gonaives, Haiti (W.I.)

My name is Augustin Suprian. I grew up in a Christian family. Both my parents loved God and their faithfulness to the Lord convinced me a lot. At the age of 12, I accepted the Lord as my personal savior and was baptized at 14. At the age of 19, I attended Bible School. I was accepted at Assembly of God Bible Institute, located in a small village east of Port-Au-Prince.

In 1974, I received a call from God to go back to Gonaives. I did so. The same year I started a Church, known today as the Church of Gonaives. Since then, I became a "Church Planter." The ministry expanded over the years, and today with God's grace, Apostalic Mission of Haiti is overseeing 18 Churches within 30 miles.

I am now 45 years old, married, and a father of seven children. Both my wife and the kids are deeply involved in the ministry.

The needs are enormous, but we've been holding by faith. With the support of some beloved brothers, the ministry was able to initiate some actions, such as: Leadership Training and Development, counseling, kindergarten, grammar and elementary school, after-school activities, and food and nutrition programs.

Some of these activities survived and some did not. By faith in God, we still believe, that one day at a time, we will be able to revive them one by one. I have been traveling to the U.S. for over 10 years, the Lord has opeded some doors and my countrymen have been blessed and I know for sure that other doors will be opened.
